Therefore, if you are looking to understand the postal codes in Kenya, this guide is for you. Whether you are looking for Nairobi Postal codes or Mombasa Postal codes, you should know that each town in various counties has its respective postal codes. Below is everything that you should know.
Brief History Of The Kenyan Postal Codes
To better understand the current Postal code system we use here in Kenya, let us first understand where the idea of the Postal code system originated. The concept of Postal codes was first introduced in England, specifically London, in 1857 to manage mail in 10 city districts. However, it was not until the 20th century that it was better put into use by Ukraine when it was adopted nationwide in 1932 and later on, countries such as the United States adopted it in 1963 by introducing Zone Improvement plans (Zip Codes) in 1963 which laid a framework for the Postal code system structure used here in Kenya today by using 5 digit codes that identify specific post office for delivery purposes.
Evolution of Postal Codes in Kenya
Kenya officially introduced its first Postal code system in 1977, just 14 years after the country gained independence. However, before even 1963, Postal codes were already in Precolonial Kenya due to the influence of the British colonials as early as 1890. During this time, Postal code offices were established in Mombasa, Lamu, with its headquarters in Zanzibar to serve the entire British East African protectorate
With the construction of the railway from the early 1900s to 1920s in Kenya, the Mombasa Postal headquarters was moved to Nairobi in 1906, the new capital of Kenya, because Nairobi was in the central place of Kenya, facilitating easy movement. By the way, it is important to note that from this time until the early 1960s, the postal services of Kenya and Uganda were joined as one, but each had its own separate accounts and stamps. 1978 to today the Postal Corporation of Kenya was formed in 1999, and it continues to serve today by managing all Postal and telecommunication services
Structure of Kenyan Postal Codes
The postal codes in Kenya use numbers similar to those used by the United States zip codes; however, you should know that Kenya only has postal codes, not zip codes. The postal codes in Kenya are made up of five digits, and each digit has unique meanings that facilitate easy mail sorting and delivery to various postal offices in the Country.
The first two digits from the 5 digits of the postal code usually represent a geographical area, and in this case, it is one of the 47 counties of Kenya formed under the new 2010 Constitution. The remaining three digits represent the specific delivery office in that county.
A good example is Nairobi’s General Post Office (GPO), which has 00100. Here, the first two (00) Represent Nairobi County, while the remaining three digits (100) represent the GPO offices in Nairobi County. The same can also be said for Mombasa County, which has 80100; 80 represents the county, while 100 represents the Main GPO located in the county.
