A Kenyan Passport is essential if you are looking to do business in Kenya (if you are a Migrant) and, most importantly, for those looking to travel outside the country ( Kenyan Citizens). The National Department of Immigration offers several Kenyan passport Types that one can apply for. However, one thing is crucial when doing so: Understanding various passport fees. The type of Passport you apply for determines how much it will cost.

On November 14th, 2023, the Government of Kenya changed the passport cost. Among these changes is the cost of various Passports rising to double or more compared to the previous old prices. Types of Kenyan Passports and Their Fees

According to the Department of Immigration, there are up to 7 Types of Passports in Kenya, as follows:

1. Ordinary Passports

Ordinary passports are the most issued type of passport in Kenya. They are best suited for ordinary citizens like you and me to travel internationally where it is recognized. They are mostly available in blue color, and they last for a maximum duration of 10 years for adults and 5 years for children

Furthermore, Ordinary passports are classified into three series based on the number of pages and different pricing structures. These are:

2. Diplomatic Passports

Other common passports are diplomatic ones issued to government officials and Ambassadors. These passports are available in a maroon cover and are 48 pages, costing Ksh 5,050

3. Mutilated and Lost Passports

Mutlitated passports are damaged passports with disturbing physical appearance beyond recognition. Damaged passports are not valid for travel and must be replaced immediately, similar to lost passports. The cost for two passport types is as follows:

  • Mutilated Passport: KES 20,050
  • Lost Passport: KES 20,050

4. Certificate of Identity (for Foreigners)

A certificate of identity in Kenya is best suited for Non-Kenyan citizens who reside n Kenya but lack official papers from their country of origin to apply for passports

In Most cases, the certificate of identity is assigned for only specific purposes in the country, such as individuals looking to return to their country of origin or stay for a shorter duration.

It Costs Ksh 3,050 to apply for a certificate of identity in Kenya.

5. Temporary permit

As the name suggests, a Temporary permit is a short-term travel document. It is valid for one year and is applicable to Kenyan Citizens who are looking to travel within East African countries. It is only issued where there is a need, such as when you need to travel urgently for emergencies or specific purposes in a situation where there is no time for you to apply for any of the passport types that we have gone through above.

The cost of a Temporary permit in Kenya Is Ksh 1,050

6. Interstate Pass (EAC)

This travel document is issued to Kenya citizens looking to travel to any of the Eastern African countries. EAC member countries are Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

The benefit of applying for an EAC interstate pass in Kenya is that it is completely free of charge
