As we know it, the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education ( KCPE) examinations were phased out with the introduction of the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) as a replacement under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) framework for the Grade 6 learners. Unlike the KCPE exams, which just focused on evaluating the overall knowledge of the learners, the KPSEA evaluates learners in several subjects, including Mathematics, English, Integrated Science, Kiswahili/Sign Language, and Creative Arts & Social Studies, ensuring that they do not have just the neded knowledge bit as well as the skills on those various subjects before transitioning to the next phase of their studies in Junior High school.
But among all these, one thing that remains particularly useful for the learners to get to know and understand is that at the end of the Year, they must Sit for the examinations, which does not just help them to transition to the next level but also provides valuable feedback to educators and policymakers on areas needing improvement in the curriculum implementation. As I write this article, the Kenya National and Examination Council has already released the KPSEA examination timetable, which gives us a clear roadmap of when these examinations will start and end.
What is the KPSEA Examination?
By now, it is clear from my introduction above what the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) is. However, for those who might not be aware, these are examinations that Grade 6 learners do under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), which focuses on assessing learners’ competencies rather than their knowledge retention. The KPSEA exams focus only on 40% of the final score, with the remaining 60% coming from classroom-based continuous assessments conducted in Grades 4, 5, and 6.
