Georgia is officially known as the State of Georgia in the United States. It is located in the southeastern United States and is the fourth State of the United States. Georgia became so after joining the Union on January 2, 1788, following its establishment as a British colony in 1733.

Georgia is the only State in the US with 159 counties, the most of any state in the nation. It also comprises 535 incorporated municipalities, comprising various cities, towns, and consolidated city counties. Surprisingly, no Gerogian law defines how cities and towns are made up; instead, both are identified as incorporated municipalities.
