Delaware is state number 1 in the United States, so it is commonly known as the “First State, ” having been admitted to the Union on December 7, 1787. Despite being the second smallest state in the nation by total area (approximately 6,446 square kilometers), Delaware has a rich history as far as the 16th century and many communities.

The state is divided into three counties—New Castle, Kent, and Sussex—which are organized into 57 incorporated municipalities (10 cities, 44 towns, and 3 villages). According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2023 Population Estimates, Delaware has roughly 1,031,890 inhabitants. Notably, while Wilmington is the largest city by population, Dover—the state capital—is the largest by area, spanning about 23.67 square miles (61.30 square kilometers).
