Washington is the 42nd state of the United States, which was admitted to the Union on November 11, 1889, following its territorial period that began in 1853. The state’s constitution was ratified on October 1, 1889, and President Benjamin Harrison signed the proclamation formalizing its statehood later that year. Washington has 66,456 square miles and is home to 7.8 million residents as of 2023, with 65.4% living in incorporated municipalities.
Washington has 39 counties and 281 municipalities classified as cities or towns. In addition, Cities are further categorized into first-class, second-class, and code cities based on population thresholds and governance structures defined by Titles 35 and 35A of the Revised Code of Washington. On the other hand, Towns are limited to populations below 1,500 at incorporation. However, new towns cannot be formed since a legislative change in 1994 raised the minimum population for incorporation to 1,500.
