New Mexico became the 47th state of the United States after being admitted to the Union on January 6, 1912, following a long territorial history dating back to its annexation under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848. It covers 121,298 square miles, making it the fifth-largest state by land area, and has a population of approximately 2.1 million as of 2025.

New Mexico state is made up of 33 counties and contains 106 municipalities categorized into various 106 cities, 10 towns, 65 villages, and one incorporated county. What makes each of them unique is their size and governance structures; cities generally have larger populations and more complex administrative systems than towns and villages.

Municipalities in New Mexico are governed by unique legal frameworks that require county residents to hold elections and file necessary documentation for incorporation as provided in Section 3-2-4 of NMSA 1978. Once formed, municipalities adopt one of five government forms: Mayor-Council, Mayor-Council with Manager, Council-Manager, Commission-Manager, or City-County Council-Manager. As of the writing, Los Alamos is the only city-county municipality in the state.
