Nebraska was the 37th state to join the Union after being admitted on March 1, 1867. What makes Nebraska’s admission unique is that it is the only state in the nation admitted through a presidential veto override by President Andrew Johnson . However, like many other states, it comprises municipal structures comprising cities and villages rather than towns. As of 2025, Nebraska has 530 incorporated places, consisting of 147 cities and 383 villages.

So, what’s the difference between a city and a village in Nebraska? Generally, Cities are classified as first-class, having 5,000-100,000 residents, second-class, having 800-5,000 residents, while villages have 100-800 inhabitants. This classification system was established by state law to allow for the transition between classifications as populations change over time.

Furthermore, Nebraska has a total of 93 counties that continue to strengthen municipal governance functions specifically, with county boards being responsible for incorporating villages and managing various county services.
