Kansas is the 34th state of the United States admitted to the union on January 29, 1861, under the Wyandotte Constitution, which defined its boundaries and governance structure. However, its history can be traced back to May 30, 1854, when it was founded as a territory through the Kansas-Nebraska Act.

The government of Kansas is a republican democracy with three branches: executive, legislative, and judicial. It has 105 counties and over 600 municipalities, including cities, towns, and villages. Each municipality is classified based on its population and governance structure. However, in General, Cities are typically larger and have more extensive services than towns or villages, which are generally smaller communities with fewer resources.

The formation of cities and towns in Kansas is governed by state law, primarily through the Kansas Home Rule Amendment, allowing local governments to make decisions best suited to their communities.
