Alaska is the largest state in the United States by land, covering a total of 1,723,337 square kilometers. It was founded on January 3, 1959, when it was admitted to the Union, though its history spans back to 1867 when the U.S. purchased Alaska from Russia.
Today, unlike other states divided into counties, Alaska is administratively organized into 19 organized boroughs and one Unorganized Borough, further divided into 11 non-administrative census areas for statistical purposes.
In Alaska, the municipal organization includes 147 incorporated places, which include cities and city-borough combinations. These are classified as four unified home-rule municipalities (boroughs and cities), ten home-rule cities, nineteen first-class cities (as per general law), and 116 second-class cities (also under general law). Additionally, there are 207 Census Designated Places (CDPs) representing recognized communities for census purposes without formal incorporation.
Incorporated cities are governed under either “general law” (subdivided into first and second class) or “home rule” status as defined by Title 29 of the Alaska Statutes. To incorporate as a home rule or first-class city, at least 400 permanent residents are typically required; however, some exceptions exist due to historical incorporations or population changes over time.
