A Kenyan Passport is essential if you are looking to do business in Kenya (if you are a Migrant) and, most importantly, for those looking to travel outside the country ( Kenyan Citizens). The National Department of Immigration offers several Kenyan passport Types that one can apply for. However, one thing is crucial when doing so: Understanding various passport fees. The type of Passport you apply for determines how much it will cost.
On November 14th, 2023, the Government of Kenya changed the passport cost. Among these changes is the cost of various passports, which has increased to double or more compared to the previous prices. For example, the 34-page passport, previously Ksh 4,500, is now Ksh 7,500. But this is just one. We have mentioned how much other passport types cost, but hey, in the article.
Types of Kenyan Passports and Their Fees
According to the Department of Immigration, there are up to 7 Types of Passports in Kenya, as follows:
1. Ordinary Passports
Ordinary passports are the most commonly issued type of passport in Kenya. They are best suited for ordinary citizens like you and me to travel internationally, where they are recognised. They are mostly available in blue, and they last for a maximum duration of 10 years for adults and 5 years for children.
Furthermore, Ordinary passports are classified into three series based on the number of pages and different pricing structures. These are:

3. Mutilated and Lost Passports
Mutlitated passports are damaged passports with a disturbing physical appearance beyond recognition. Damaged passports are not valid for travel and must be replaced immediately, similar to lost passports. The cost for the two passport types is as follows:

- Lost Passport: KES 20,050
4. Certificate of Identity (for Foreigners)
A certificate of identity in Kenya is best suited for non-Kenyan citizens who reside in Kenya but lack official papers from their country of origin to apply for passports.
In most cases, the certificate of identity is assigned only for specific purposes in the country, such as individuals looking to return to their country of origin or stay for a shorter duration.
It costs Ksh 3,050 to apply for a certificate of identity in Kenya.
5. Temporary permit
As the name suggests, a Temporary permit is a short-term travel document. It is valid for one year and is applicable to Kenyan Citizens who are looking to travel within East African countries. It is only issued where there is a need, such as when you need to travel urgently for emergencies or specific purposes in a situation where there is no time for you to apply for any of the passport types that we have gone through above.
The cost of a Temporary permit in Kenya is Ksh 1,050
6. Interstate Pass (EAC)
