University of Eldoret History

The University of Eldoret was established in 2013; however, it has a long history that can be traced to the pre-independence era. The idea was first formalized in 1946 when there was a need to establish a Large Scale Farmer’s Training Centre. Many years later, in 1984, the farmer’s center was converted to Moi Teachers’ Training College to offer Diploma Science Teachers Training. However, in 1990, the college faced a double intake crisis, and as a result, it was reconstituted as Moi University Chepkoilel Campus.

As years progressed, the college grew, and thus, in 2010, through a legal notice, the campus was given a university status college and name to Chepkoilel University College. Three years later, on 11th February 2013, the University College was renamed the University of Eldoret after being awarded a University charter and became an independent institution from Moi University.
